LAHORE – The electronic media reports suggest that Inspector General of Police Mushtaq Sukhera has refused to arrest the policemen who shot fire at Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) workers.
Sources confirmed on Saturday that IG Punjab wrote a letter to Chief Minister of Punjab Shahbaz Sharif and maintained that policemen were simply following the orders.
The IG did not specify whose orders they were following.
Meanwhile, a list of the policemen who used their weapons during the clash is being compiled. According to sources, footage of the incident was acquired from private channels and is being used to identify those who opened fire.
Moreover, a special anti-terrorism court (ATC) granted bail to 44 workers of the PAT held during a deadly clash with police in Model Town on June 17.
At least 12 PAT workers were killed and 90 others wounded when police tried to remove barricades from the office of Minhaj ul Quran Secretariat in Lahore.
Lawyers representing the PAT’s workers argued that police failed to produce any evidence against their clients.
Judge Khalid Mahmood, after hearing arguments of two sides, accepted their bail plea and directed them to submit surety bonds of Rs100, 000.
