Lieutenant General Raheel Sharif is on a third in seniority list.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday chooses Lieutenant General Rashid Mehmood for the seat of new Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC).
Prime Minister ignored the number one contender Lieutenant General Haroon Aslam who was working as a Principal Staff Officer (PSO) to Gen Kayani – Chief of Logistics Staff (CLS).
According to the Army rules, now Haroon Aslam would apply for pre-retirement.
Both senior generals met Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif earlier today where the premier conveyed them the decision. The two meetings are being viewed as of immense significance as they come a day before General Kayani’s retirement from his post of army chief.
The President Mamoon Hussain also recognized the decision made by the PM regarding the appointments.
Experts said that the meeting of the PM with Rashid Mehmood and Raheel Sharif given hint that the premier had picked both for the important positions.
Lieutenant General Rashid Mehmood was currently working as a Principal Staff Officer (PSO) to Gen Kayani – Chief of General Staff (CGS) while the Lieutenant General Raheel Sharif was working as a Principal Staff Officer (PSO) to Gen Kayani Inspector General Training and Evaluation (IGT&E).
It is pertinent to mention here that the Nawaz Sharif in his previous government also picked Pervez Musharaf as COAS who was the the junior ranked General.
The post of army chief is arguably the most powerful in Pakistan. General Sharif succeeds General Ashfaq Kayani, who steps down on Friday after six years in the top post.
General Kayani’s retirement from the post comes after rules were relaxed to grant him an extension in July 2010 by the PPP-led coalition government in what then prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said was in the interest of continuity at a time
