ISLAMABAD – Islamabad Accountability Court (AC) judge Muhammad Bashir on Tuesday began hearing in five corruption references against former president Asif Ali Zardari, who is likely to be indicted in one of them, in Polo Ground Reference, on December 2.
The court has summoned the 17 witnesses of the prosecution on 9th of December. The court has reopened all five corruption references against former president. The former president has already been indicted in ARY Gold reference.
The cases against Zardari, who enjoyed immunity for being head of the state in the past, have been reopened by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) are: ARY Gold reference, SGS-Cotecna, Polo Ground reference, Ursus Tractors case and Asset case.
Zardari’s counsel Farooq H. Naik informed the court that his client could not appear before the court due to security reasons. He assured the court that the former president will appear before the court on next hearing of the case. He said currently Asif Zardari is at abroad and could not appear before the court. He requested exemption from appearance which was granted by the court. The copies of the polo ground reference were provided to Farooq Naek.
NAB’s counsel informed the court that the former president, who is currently in Dubai, has left the country therefore the court’s notice could not be served to him.
The court ordered that the ex-president will be indicted in Polo Ground reference case on Dec. 2, 2013. The court also ordered to produce prosecutor’s witnesses in ARY Gold reference case on Dec. 9. The court also adjourned the further hearing of the other references against Asif Zardari till 9th of December.
