Nawaz Sharif and Modi

ISLAMABAD – The office of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has acknowledged receiving the invitation sent by India to attend the oath taking ceremony of Narendar Mody, the leader of Bhartia Janta Party (BJP), however, no decision yet taken.

However, the sources from the Prime Minister House said on Thursday that no decision was yet taken whether Nawaz Sharif would attend the ceremony or not.

Pakistani premier was the first among world’s leader who called Narendar Modi to congratulate over his victory in 2014 Indian general elections.

Narendar Modi had extended invitation to the leaders of all South Asian countries to attend his oath taking ceremony.

The analysts and veteran diplomats in Pakistan hold a mixed stance over this invitation. Some see it as a chance to revive relation with a new government from day one. While others believe it would be too early to make any move.

Sherry Rehman, the former ambassador of Pakistan in US, said “Consider everything and also consider what message you would send to the new government in India by refusing this invitation.”
