PESHAWAR – Advocate Samiullah Afridi distanced himself from infamous ‘spy-doc’ Dr Shakil Afridi’s case citing threat to life and American pressure.
According to a statement given by Samiullah on Saturday, he denied to continue proving legal services to Shakil Afridi.
Samiullah was defending Shakil Afridi in court of law who had allegedly launched a fake anti-polio campaign to trace holy warrior Osama Bin Laden in May 2011.
Samiullah said “I have couple of reason to leave the case. There is an immense pressure from America over Pakistan to get Dr Shakil Afridi released. While, Dr Afia Siddiqui was in prison in US and had no hope of release. Moreover, I also have life threats from banned outfits for representing Dr Shakil Afridi.”
It is pertinent to mention here that earlier this year, US linked the aid to Pakistan with Dr Shakil Afridi’s release. Though Pakistan foreign office had condemned the US policy but later in March 2014, the Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR) Commissioner Peshawar Munir Azam has reduced the prison terms of Dr. Shakil Afridi from 33 years to 23 years.
