Alert Cell Phone users: 3G, 4G fraud in Pakistan debunked

ISLAMABAD – The good news of 3G and 4G technology has brought its hazards due to the delay in formally launching the services as now miscreants using it to make some easy ransom money.

The details gathered by the correspondents revealed that until Monday at least ten cases of 3G, 4G fraud were surfaced in different cities of Pakistan.

One victim described the fraud as:

The miscreants called me and sought my willingness whether to use 3G, 4G technology. Upon my agreement the guy on the other side asked me to provide some details. Then he advised me to switch off my cell phone for two hours. Meanwhile they contacted my family for the ransom amount claiming that I was being kidnapped. My family paid the amount as it was not more than Rs 200,000.

The security authorities, when being informed about the new crime tactic, commented that the possibility of someone from the family or close friends to do this kind of crime is quite high.

One IT expert, when contacted, told PakistanTribe that technology related frauds in Pakistan were never a new phenomenon in Pakistan. “Unfortunately there have always been some evil geniuses who always manipulate the usefulness of technology in a negative way.”

He also said that 3G, 4G technology would not require any extra software or switching off-switching on of your device when launched.
