Leon Chang, 27, is charged with statutory rape and contacting a minor for lewd purposes for the relationship with a current senior that began last year, the San Leandro Police Department stated in a release.
According to the reports from local media, the affair comes in limelight after a colleague caught them in the act and reported it.
Police have been investigating the incident for several months after the district informed police.
Investigators found additional information and forensic evidence that determined there had been an ongoing sexual relationship that occurred between Chang and the teenager, police said.
The investigation is ongoing
Chang taught math at San Leandro High School for nearly six years
“It’s always surprising when it’s a teacher,” Lt. Mike Sobek told the television station, “It’s always unfortunate.”
The district has suspended Chang without pay and they are investigating the situation.
School district board member Mike Katz-Lacabe told the Oakland Tribune news of the incident was “surprising.”
“The district is working to figure out what we could have done better to either detect this early or prevent it in the first place,” Katz-Lacabe told the newspaper. “As parents and school board members, our utmost concern first is safety of students. Before any teaching takes place, we need to make sure they are safe.”
