The greatest honor: A Pakistani decorating Masjid-e-Nabvi since 1990

Ustad Shafiquz Zaman

WEB DESK – Once an amateur roadside calligrapher in Karachi, Ustaad Shafiquz Zaman, had then transformed into the official calligrapher of Masjid-e-Nabvi ever since 1990 and decorated 177 dooms ever since.

Ustaad Shafiquz Zaman told his story of reaching Madina – the city of Prophet Mohammed Peace Be Upon Him – from Karachi.

He said, 25 years ago he was only an amateur calligrapher on Bandar Road of Karachi. One fine day when he was busy drawing, one Arab stopped by him. For few minutes the Arab spoke to his associate. Then the associate spoke to Shafiquz Zaman who told him the actual purpose.

The associate told him that the man was actually an Arab Sheikh who visited the whole Pakistan to find the right calligrapher. They offered Shafiquz Zaman to come along with them to Riyadh for which he agreed.

Shafiquz Zaman said that was the milestone of his life.

Shafiquz Zaman also said that till 1990, Turkey, Egypt and Iraq’s schools of calligraphy were dominating providing the artists for Masjid-e-Nabvi. He was, however, the first Pakistani who was officially appointed as sole calligrapher in Masjid-e-Nabvi.

Shafiquz Zaman also said that he never acquired any formal training of art, painting or calligraphy. It had always remained his passion which he learnt with the grace of Allah and personal observation.

He also told in interview that once in life (before 1990) he wanted one of his calligraphy to be placed in Masjid-e-Nabvi but the permission was not granted. Later in life he got to decorate 177 dooms of the same sacred place and for the period of over 25 years.
