Two-day model UN (NMUN) 13 Conference Opens at NUML | PakistanTribeISLAMABAD – This time National University of Modern Languages (NUML), Islamabad, has become rendezvous for NUML Model United Nations (NMUN) 2013, Conference and brought home ideals of debate, dialogue, fraternity, integration, exposure, harmony, nationalism and education.

 

The two-day long NMUN 2013 with the agenda of “be friends to prosper” was kick started after the formal inauguration by the Chief Guest Rector Maj Gen (R) Masood Hasan in a graceful and highly charged ceremony. The opening ceremony was also attended by the Director General (DG) Brig Azam Jamal, Director Admin Brig (R) Tariq Qureshi, Directors, Organisers of the events, Deans, Heads, Faculty members and great number of students from the all regional campuses of the university.

Rector NUML Maj Gen (R) Masood Hasan while speaking at the opening ceremony said that “Though the concept and nature of UN General Assembly forum is quite difficult to understand, the proceedings of the committees in NMUN, discussion session, and position papers would help students to have an idea how the international body works”. “Moreover, it is pleasure to see that students are growing, flourishing and learning to exercise practically what they have learnt in their classes. This learning would go long way in terms of preparing students for their future lives and real issues faced by the entire world”, he added.

The Focal person of NMUN Pashmeena Mughal told the scribe that “MUN (Model United Nations) is the format of General Assembly platform with multiple committees to discuss & debate different world issues followed by their proposed resolutions”. “It is a competition in which participants have to simulate the United Nation and its committees while being the diplomats/ delegates of particular country which is usually assigned by the host team. The delegates have to research properly on the assigned country and to talk on their behalf on all the issues and debates”, she added.

This conference also features music evening, food stalls, games, sports, theme dinner on OSCAR, proceeding of UN Committees including UNSC (United Nations Security Council) DISEC (Disarmament and International Security Committee), SOCHUM (Social, Cultural &  Humanitarian Committee), UNIFEM (United Nations Development Fund for Women), and UNHRC (United Nations Human Rights Council). Around 165 participants from 7 regional campuses are participating in this conference. Moreover, a special section for Farhan Tanvir (Late) a very vibrant participant and organizer who passed away a day before the start of conference) has also been established to pay tribute to the departed soul. Besides the academic sides of the event, the décor, backgrounds and settings was developed to create the right ambiance of UN General Assembly.

The president of the event Kli Zara speaking at the occasion said that “this event would bind us all into one big large community where we can share and exchange to learn and lead.” “The delegates would be experiencing a next level of debating and you would enjoy the event thoroughly”, she added.

The General Secretary of NMUN Asim Mushtaq while speaking at the occasion said “Our main goal is to learn something new, and that in the spirit of “be friends to prosper, we grasp a good understanding of the problems that our generation is growing up to face, discuss the solutions we may find ahead and come up with peace and negotiations over global issues with a combined effort to understand how thing work in real scenarios”.

The first day of the conference includes two sessions of the five committees in which two topics would be discussed by each committee and after that social event like Music performances and games would be arranged for the recreation of participants. The closing ceremony and Theme Dinner on Oscar would be held tomorrow.
